INFORMATIVE ARCHETYPES V1.0
 
 
DESCRIPTION
Integrative design workshop focusing on implementing BIM methods to conceptualize bridges and pathways. Students will be designing a pedestrian bridge linking Knyajeska and Borisova gardens overcoming Evlogi and Hristo Georgievi blvds. in city of Sofia. Based on overall geometry, a parametric system is to be designed regarding architectural aspects of the site.
 
The workshop will take off from making self-aware BIM Families using intelligent Parameters and slide all the way through integrating them as elements to assemble the final geometry.
 
Teaming – teaming is based on “families” made by each participant. Further, teams will devise a spatial concept – a theme regarding their combined chosen design factors. A team’s theme will consist of logical cores – the previously chosen factors – and will be used as a guideline and purpose of the design.
 
Formative Geometry. Controlling Family Parameters the team’s chosen parameters can be used to derive an overall geometrical concept.
 
Constraint-Based Form-Finding. Long Nguyen, the creator of DynaShape package for Dynamo, will join us for a Skype walk-through session to introduce us to the world of finding form through physical constraints in a BIM environment.
 
Each generated geometry will have
1.Main road/pathway
2.Structural parts
3.Detail elements. Such as a paneling system.
4.Control of elements via parameters
 
Participants will be exposed to an atmosphere of exploration on the aesthetic potential of such design processes and learn to present their work in an intriguing graphical manner and to extract valuable information about the design from the model. 
 
 
DETAILS
BIM design techniques
Participants will be introduced to BIM, learn how BIM can be integrated with external references, its advantages compared to other computer-aided design methods.
Participants will be provided with a 3D model of the same and a data-set regarding the site and learn how to inform design workflow using that data.
 
Based on Data
As a bonus, some environment analysis tools and methods will be introduced in order to recreate a sufficient description of site-specific factors. The input data could also be for structural or even pure aesthetic purposes.
 
Parameterizing a BIM system
Setting on baseline geometry and conditions of site, participants will further elaborate into the BIM-specific workflow utilizing parametric families and nested types. Procedural control of Revit families through Dynamo would allow highly responsive and informed system.

REQUIRED SOFTWARE
Each Participant should provide their own computer with the following software installed. If you do not have a software, trial versions can be found on each software company’s website. We will send participants links to the required software, trials, and plug-ins for download. Please have the software installed prior to workshop start. If you have issues installing software, we may be able to help you during the workshop.

LOGISTICS
Informative Archetypes V1.0 will expand from 22 – 29 July 2017.
Informative Archetypes V1.0 will include one intensive course:
Daily meetings will take place from 10:00 to 18:00 at the Union of the Architects in Bulgaria, Krakra 11 str., Sofia.
Participants will first work individually and then be combined into groups.
There will be a final presentation of your groups work containing renderings and diagrams on 29 July, 2017.
All projects will be published on DesignMorphine’s web page.
All participants who complete the workshop will receive a certificate of completion.
For attending the workshop and intensive courses there is no previous software experience required.
Participants need to bring their own laptops or workstations.
Please note that places are very limited on a first pay first serve basis!

Arek Keshishian is a practicing architect, BIM Manager, consultant and trainer, graduated with honor from NUACA, Yerevan. Arek has been organizing and conducting 3-month long BIM courses over the past three years training students and professionals alike, helping many main local architectural design studios successfully convert from CAD to BIM processes. Having taught more than 200 people so far, his organization “Skillshop EVN” is regarded to be the one that brought BIM to his country. He enjoys constant exploration of new methods of design and automation of tedious workflows, which apart from leading him to self-teach various software, made him participate in many international workshops, two of them being DesignMorphine ones, namely Intelligent Tectonics V1.0 and Dynamic Mutations V3.0, after which he teamed up with DesignMorphine design director Michael Pryor for the Tokyo Vertical Cemetery competition by Arch Out Loud before finally becoming a proud official member of Design Morphine in September 2016.

Zlatko Yanakiev

Zlatko has been involved with DesignMorphine for some time now and has assisted at several workshops. He has been a tutor for Grasshopper in a digital fabrication workshop. He was teaching first year students about the principles behind computational design during an UACEG practice. He has substantial experience with digital fabrication (Laser Cutters and 3D printers). He has participated and won multiple competitions. His projects are focused on exploring the computational design methods and the ways of optimizing workflow and workload automation. His interests involve kinetic structures, creating active environments and data analysis. His passion is finding real-life material solutions for ideas and abstract concepts.

Long Nguyen

Research Associate @ ICD Stuttgart

Long Nguyen is a Research Associate at the Institute for Computational Design, where he joined in October 2014. His academic background is in Computer Science, with an emphasis in 3D Computer Graphics. He holds a Bachelor degree in Computer Science from Cambridge University and a Master degree with Distinction in Computer Graphics and Virtual Environment from University College London (UCL).

Long started to be involved with the architecture and building community in 2011, with primary focuses on BIM (Building Information Modelling) and computational design. He developed a small collection of Revit plugins that expands the conceptual modelling capabilities of the software and organized a number of workshops to train architecture students in computational design and thinking using these plugins. In 2013, Long participated in two Zaha Hadid Architects projects in Morocco and China as a technology consultant, in which he led the development of a tool set that enable the shared modelling workflow between Rhinoceros/Grasshopper and Revit.

Long’s current research at the ICD primarily focuses on evolutionary methods as exploratory design tools. He also has a great passion for teaching programming, algorithms, mathematics and computational design thinking, especially to architecture students and practitioners.

Yavor Stoykov is a 3D Artist with years of experience in 3D modelling and visualization. He holds a Master’s degree in Architecture from the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy in Sofia, Bulgaria. Yavor joined the Chaos Group 3D team in 2010, after working for an architectural practice. Since then he has been one of the main driving forces behind the creation of the V-Ray Training Programs and arch-viz demos.

Martin Petrov

Martin has participated in numerous competitions, gaining various awards. His primary focus in the field of parametric and generative design is structural analysis, form optimization and agent-based design. His inspiration is gained mostly through mathematics and quantum physics, which he started learning intensively in high school. Martin has experience in many workshops and courses as a participant and assistant. He has participated in Generative Morphologies V2.0 Workshop and Visual Machine V1.0 Workshop and was an assistant in Computation Matters V1.0 Workshop, Intelligent Tectonics V1.0 Workshop, and Generative Morphologies V3.0 Workshop. Martin has also worked briefly in studio GRID, expanding his knowledge in parametric design. He has few projects developed through the parametric principles and has been lecturing for DesignMorphine.

Graduated dept. of Urban Architectural Design with thesis on alternative industrial construction systems. As a trainee at PublicWorks, London, UK, got introduced to bottom-up strategies in architecture. Interested in intersecting bottom-up approaches in construction (i.e. robotic fabrication, autonomous materialization) and architectural industrial systems with a stress on engineering and simulation. With theoretical interests in structured space as conditionally-driven rather than formal phenomenon. Received multiple travel and studies scholarships. DesignMorphine’s Computation Matters V1.0 scholarship. Licensed architect. Employed in WALLTOPIA’s Design team with responsibilities on both capital projects and sport and adventure facilities design.
