REQUIREMENTS
 

There are no software knowledge requirements per say, but the more you know in advance the better. Keep in mind this series is recorded, the idea is that you learn from it but also that you can come back to it and re-watch in the future as much as you like when you’ve gained more experience if you feel you were not able to keep up at first. We won’t spend much time on intro to each software as that is easy to find online for free and does not fit into our 4.5 hour time frames. What we offer here are unique workflows you will only see from us and those workflows are what we will strictly focus on per the webinar descriptions. To reiterate, do not expect these webinars to be intro to software classes as there is plenty of that available online for free.

Formfinding Optimized Shells

Description: This webinar will focus designing shell type structures with emphasis on structural optimization. We will use a two-step process where the shell will first be generated in Grasshopper and then evaluated in Karamba for its structural properties. The goal is for participants to understand design iteration by utilizing a feedback loop of information, in this case structural analysis. To emphasize this design approach, we will introduce Kangaroo for shell formfinding and connect it to Karamba to help us understand the structural elements. Once an optimal solution has been determined, the design will be baked into Rhino.

Description: This webinar will explore a set of modeling techniques that deploy a parametric workflow to achieve dynamic complex design and structures. This include the use of advanced poly-modeling and animation techniques in Autodesk Maya, Nphysics, NCloth, NHair and MASH nodes. After a quick introduction to the Maya interface, we will be exposed to building an effective workflow, using key features from modeling and rendering software in order to achieve a series of parametrically controlled designs faster and more efficiently. This webinar will include tutorials on Luxion Keyshot, teaching how to quickly bring your 3D ideas to life using real time photorealistic or conceptual rendering.

Description: This webinar will focus on creating complex geometry driven by low-poly geometry components that respond to their local data environment. Attendants will learn advanced modeling workflows combining procedural polygon modeling in Maya and parametric design in Grasshopper to create detailed organic aggregated design systems. By the end of the webinar, attendants will dominate morphing workflows to create seamless bespoke three dimensional patterns guided by data fields which can be scaled to become anything from an architectural space to jewelry on a person.

Description: This webinar will explore non-conventional projection and boolean based modelling strategies in Zbrush, developing complex architectural design modules. These structures shall be deployed and converted to an interactive architectural urbanscape in Unreal Engine 4 using procedural generative workflows. The wbinar will address the synergy between contemporary architectural design methodologies and gamification concepts to develop immersive and interactive architectural spaces. By the end of the webinar, attendants will develop a playable gamescape created using for loops, level streaming and procedural workflows in a game engine.

Description: This webinar is a programming guide for Grasshopper users willing to create fully-fledged C# plug-ins. The range of topics spans from custom display through casting, serialization, baking, plug-in file structure to debuging. The course will start from setting up a plug-in structure and compilation in Visual Studio. Afterwards a custom data type will be created, which will handle casting, display, baking etc. The next task will be to create a Grasshopper component with a custom appearance on the Canvas. Finally, Canvas event handling will be demonstrated. By the end of the webinar, participants will see the proper way to set up, organize, and create a Grasshopper plug-in.

Description: In this webinar, we’ll do a case-study on a fluid-like organic building envelope design that involves using seamless interoperability between Rhino and Revit by coordinating between the platforms, using the strengths of each software. Revit is one of the leading BIM platforms, it starts lacking when it comes to Nurbs modeling and freeform/organic designs. Rhino, one the other side, is a powerful Nurbs and SubD modeling instrument, but it’s not BIM.  We will begin by using the new SubD tools in Rhino 7 WIP to model our skin, then paneling it using Grasshopper, analyze the parts, then slide to methods for placing Revit adaptive components using penalization coordinates from Grasshopper. Linking analysis results to BIM parameters and documenting and scheduling the parts in Revit will be covered as well.

Description: This webinar will focus on  fluid interconnected jewelry objects such as rings, bracelets, or necklaces. The jewelry base structure will be comprised of connected morph-able spaces called Twisted Boxes that will be flowing along guide curve paths. We will then create custom cell module units which can connect to each other at a low poly level to then morph into the twisted boxes, subdivide, and smooth together. During the cell creation process, participants will learn various connection and interweaving strategies as well as how to create topologically identical cell units that can be blended between to create gradient geometry aesthetics.

Alejandra is the founder of “By Alejandra Design” which focuses on creating intricate design products for both home décor and wearable art. Alejandra also teaches at New York Institute of Technologies Architecture program. Previously, she has worked for architectural studios in Toronto and London. Alejandra completed her Postgraduate Master in Architecture and Urbanism (DRL) at the Architectural Association in 2015. Her thesis, “The Thread” was developed under the Robert Stuart-Smith Studio in collaboration with her team. “The Thread” explored the design opportunities of a semi-autonomous airborne tensile system, and was published in the Parametricism 2.0 edition of The Architectural Design magazine. In 2013, she graduated from the University of Waterloo. Upon graduation, she moved to NYC where she is currently working at FFA.

Nicolas Turchi is a designer currently working at Zaha Hadid Architects and a Digital Futures PhD scholar at Tongji University. Nicolas holds a Master in Architecture II from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Bologna and University of West of England. He has worked for several firms including Eisenman Architects, Xefirotarch, Mario Cucinella Architects and 5+1AA. Nicolas is particularly interested in emergent technologies and how they affect the theoretical aspect of the discipline. He has also been studying the relationship between architecture and philosophy and graduated with a thesis on Time and Space In architecture, influenced by the thought of Henri Bergson and Edmund Husserl.

Vamsi Krishna Vemuri is a Speculative architect and designer who recently graduated from the Staedelschule Architecture Class, Frankfurt, Germany. His areas of Interest lie in eccentric utilization of Computation & real-time visualization, in a post digital paradigm, convoluting Arts, science and Architectural design discourse. His first-year project dealt with high resolution pixel models and big data manifestation in Architecture. He is impelled by digital medium specificity, gaming, concept art and VFX. He was involved in extensive research and production of advanced multi-colored 3D print fabrication of Architecture and product design. He holds a diverse experience on communicating the notion of form and space by engaging the mediums of film-making and video game development. The recent thesis project for his masters deals with a platform based video game, devised in a near-future fictional augmented city, where the apparatus produces aggregations that are digitally intertwined within the urban fabric. He has also participated and won many Architecture & Design competitions with various teams, in both professional and academic domains. He is currently practicing as a freelance consulting Architect and designer engaging in diverse collaborations and projects with professionals across the world.

Graduated from the Department of Architecture and Design of the Poznań University of Arts in 2012. Focused on parametric and generative design, which he considers to be a natural way of design thinking. Computational design popularizer, tutor for many international workshops, co-author of the first Polish parametric design oriented website (projektowanieparametryczne.pl). He developed a variety of Grasshopper plugins: Anemone, Starling, Squid, Owl, and other scripts and freeware software for the Grasshopper community. He was previously a research assistant at CITA Copenhagen. Currently he is a Research assistant at Fachgebiet Digitale Entwurfsmethoden and runs his computational consultancy company called Object (theobject.co). Having taught more than 600 people so far, his organization, Skillshop is considered to be the most advanced architectural design training center in Armenia. Michael Pryor is a computational designer currently at Nike NXT | Innovation. He has been involved in various major built or in construction works in the US, China, Dubai, and Lebanon and is currently the Design Director for DesignMorphine. In the past, he has worked at Trahan Architects, SOMA Architects, OLI Architecture, and [AY] Architecture on a range of architectural design projects ranging from museums, housing, restaurants, furniture, products, and prototypes. He was granted The New York Society of Architects Matthew W. Del Gaudio award for excellence in total design upon graduation. Additionally, Michael is the author of the popular Grasshopper3d plug-in Pufferfish and an avid Grasshopper forum aide.
