VERTICAL VARIABLES 2.0 is a workshop supported by the Union of the Architects in Bulgaria that will focus on the applications of various computational strategies in the design of high rise buildings. As a new architectural paradigm emerges with the development of the new technologies, parametric tools are becoming more essential and particularly applicable for the modern skyscraper design. In this regard, the participants will be introduced to computational design techniques which will lead to form finding and optimization through various parameters. This approach enables designers and architects to overcome the imposition of a prefixed form and thus discover and create more compelling and enhanced designs. The goal of the workshop is for the participants to have a final result – skyscraper designs in Sofia. In order to get as close as possible to the real issues, participants will be provided with а layout of the latest urban plans for a high – rise building area in the city – in the north – western part of Liulin district. Our collaboration with the Union of the Architects aims to face all the challenges regarding the future skyscraper designs in Sofia. The results of the workshop will be strongly anticipated by the architectural and academic community in the capital.
The workshop will begin with introduction to Rhino 3D and Grasshopper which are going to be the main tools to carry out studies of the final design. Participants will be guided through the writing of parametric definitions in Grasshopper and the applications of various plug-ins for it. For the purpose of the workshop the students will be provided with an actual site in Sofia where all the designs are going to be located in correlation to each other. Based on this site, a solar analysis with Ladybug will be performed in order to optimize building location and height. The process will also go through form behavior analysis and form finding strategies, paneling techniques and optimization of various parameters. Participants will be divided into teams to develop their own projects with the support of the tutors and assistants. 3D printing tutorials and printers on site will also be provided for all experimental purposes.
